With heavy rain over the past two days and storm clouds knocking at the door, the Putnam County Championship Meet was a wet and rough affair. With mud and puddles spread throughout the course, the SP runners had a challenging evening of racing that end with some strong performances.
The girls’ team got the meet started and were led by senior Samara Young. Throughout the race, Samara did a great job of working her way up the pack. With a strong last mile, she was able to solidify her All-County spot by moving up to 3rd place, edging out the forth place finisher by just three seconds. As a team, the girls were tied for third but had to settle for forth with the tie breaker going to Cloverdale.
The boys’ team was next, and it proved to be a thrilling race that came down to the wire for team scores. Senior Austin Rumley led the charge for the boys, taking first place and title of County Champ for the second year in a row. Also finishing in the top-7 and earning All-County honors were Eric Hinkle and Karl Egold. Both put in solid races, battling within the top 7 the entire time and finishing 4th and 7th respectively. For the team scores, the Eagles came up just short of the win, missing North Putnam by just two points.
The SPXC teams will next be competing in the WIC meet on Saturday, Sept. 29 at SP. The meet is schedule to begin at 10:00 AM with the girls’ varsity, followed by boys’ varsity and combined JV.
