For what feels like the first time in a long time, the SPXC teams were able to finally compete in another 5K race. For the girls it was the first race since Clay City on Sept. 6, and for the boys it was their first 5K since the Eagle-Clover Classic way back in mid-August.
Breaking from the norm this season, the weather was sunny and hot going into the Avon Invitational. Despite the warm weather, both teams took advantage of the chance to race again and put together solid performances. There were many personal records and season bests for both teams.
Leading the girls’ team was senior Samara Young. After being named Homecoming Queen the night before, her majesty came back the following morning ready to race. She led the girls with an 18th place finish and season best time. Not too far behind was homecoming princess Catherine Hodge, also finishing with a personal best time. Rounding out the top-25 was Sarah Jones, running a personal record 5K as well. With Lilly Vittetow and Ally Menke rounding out the scoring, the Eagles finished 4th overall in the field of 8 teams.
For the boys, Austin Rumley ran a strong race and led the Eagles with a 7th place finish and a season best time. Each of the SP runners following after came in with season best or personal best times to help the boys finish in 6th place as a team.
The SPXC teams will next be competing at an invitational in Edgewood on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
