The SPXC teams arrived in Brownsburg ready to race on Saturday morning. By the time things were all said and done, there were four regional qualifiers, six personal records, and two season bests.
The boys’ team was first to race, and senior Steven Schnepp once again led the way for the Eagles. Steven ran a really strong, tough race, going toe-to-toe with runners from Avon and Brownsburg, finishing in a very impressive 5th place with a PR by nearly 40 seconds. With his finish, Steven was the first individual on a non-advancing team. Karl Egold ran a smart race and really pushed his last mile to finish with a new season best time and a regional qualifying spot. Perhaps the biggest shock of the morning came from freshman Dunkin York. Dunkin put his foot on the gas and never let off, running with individuals that would normally be well in front of him. In the end, his great racing performance carried him home to a PR and one of the last advancing spots. Daniel Johnson finished his XC career with a new PR, and Trevor Vanihel ran his second best time of the season to help the boys’ team finish in a respectable 7th place. Also racing well for the boys’ team were Matt Rogers and Austen Branam; Austen finished his season with a PR by over 40 seconds.
In the girls’ race, Sarah Jones once again impressed her coaches by putting together another really strong race. She came into the meet hoping to advance, and she did so with plenty of room to spare. Sarah started out really strong and never looked back as she ran a great race and finished with a new PR by over 40 seconds. Lilly Vittetow and Catherine Hodge each finished their XC seasons with strong performances. Lilly ran a new PR by nearly 30 seconds, and Catherine finished with a season best time.
Steven, Karl, Dunkin, and Sarah will next be competing at the Ben Davis Regional on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 10:30 AM. Complete results from the Brownsburg Sectional can be found below.
