The Eagles varsity baseball team lost the lead late in a 12-8 defeat to West Vigo on Wednesday. The game was tied at six with West Vigo batting in the top of the sixth when Evan Newman hit a solo homer.
South collected ten hits and West Vigo had 13 in the high-scoring affair.
West Vigo got on the board in the first inning. The Vikings scored one run when Collin Salyers singled.
West Vigo knotted the game up at six in the top of the fifth inning. Jake Lautenschlager hit a solo homer.
After West Vigo scored two runs in the top of the third, South answered with two of their own. West Vigo scored when Lautenschlager singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run and Ethan Newman singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. The Eagles then answered when Tanner Pistelli homered on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.
Kaleb Hannahs was the winning pitcher for West Vigo. He surrendered two runs on two hits over three innings, striking out three.
Hunter Croan started the game for South Putnam Eagles Varsity. He lasted three innings, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out one. Chance Cooper started the game for West Vigo. He surrendered six runs on eight hits over four innings, striking out eight and walking one.
The Eagles hit four home runs on the day. LeBlanc went for the long ball in the fourth inning. Pistelli went yard in the third inning. Switzer had a long ball in the fourth inning. Cash had a homer in the fourth inning. West Vigo tallied four home runs on the day. Salyers put one out in the fifth inning. Lautenschlager had a four bagger in the fifth inning. Cooper had a dinger in the sixth inning. Newman went for the long ball in the sixth inning.
