Girls Varsity Track · Eagles Take on New Challenges in Track Meet with North

For the girls’ track team, this was a unique experience. For the first time in known SP T&F history, the athletes had the autonomy to decide on which events they participated in, and there were numerous surprises in choices and results. Sprinters ran distance events, runners attempted to throw, and a thrower joined a relay. Not only did they try something new, but some of them even won in events that were unusual for them.

Some of the surprise highlights include sprinter Alex Fanning stepping up and winning the 800m (after having thrown Shot for the first time in her career). Right after that she went straight back to the 200m where she finished 3rd after having only about 5 minutes rest between events. Lexi Vanihel decided to give sprinting a try (after having attempted the High Jump) and surprised everyone with a first place finish. Very last minute, Ally Menke decided to give the Long Jump a try, and she was able to jump well enough to finish in 3rd place.

Although there were many new events for most of the athletes, there were also a fair number of runners participating in their normal events. Lillie Stein ran another strong 400m, taking the win by over two seconds. Ally Nichols stayed the course for her mid-distance career and kept focus on relays and the 1600. She was a member of the winning 3200m and 1600m Relay teams (along with Lillie Stein, Lexi Vanihel, and Grace Burdge). So far this outdoor season, the girls on these relay teams are undefeated, though strong competition is on the horizon.

This was no doubt a fun experience for everyone, but things will return to normal at the next meet on Tuesday, April 17 against Shakamak and Clay City here at SP. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM.
